Whiten badly stained socks by adding 1 kitchen item to washing machine | Express.co.uk

Jun 05, 2025

Keeping the bottoms of white socks clean can feel like an uphill battle, especially if you have children. Grubby floors, trainers, and poor laundry practices can all contribute to white socks turning grey. One person who was struggling with stained white socks was Kayleigh Louise Philp. She posted on the Facebook group 'Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips' asking for advice on how to keep her "white socks white."

Kayleigh's post was inundated with more than 60 comments. One of the most unusual hacks that was mentioned which some cleaning enthusiasts swear by is using dishwasher tablets. Nicola Smith said: "A dishwasher tablet in with the whites works strangely enough!"

Paula Cherry commented: "Dishwasher tablet in the wash."

Fran Borrill replied: "Just wash all whites together no colours add either Ace for whites or a dishwasher tablet."

Dishwasher tablets contain enzymes and cleaning agents that can effectively break down proteins and starch in stains.

Some dishwasher tablets also contain bleach, which means they can whiten and brighten white items of clothing.

Dishwasher tablets can be bought from most supermarkets or online. House 24/7 Dishwasher Tabs cost £1.49 from Sainsbury's for 30, and HOME Dishwasher Tablets cost £4 for 30 from Iceland.

Other suggestions from Mrs Hinch fans for removing stains from socks included using Napisan, Vanish or Ace.

Colette McReynolds said, "Ace bleach for whites."

Ange Richmond commented: "Overnight soak in Napisan. Do a few at once then next day wash as normal with your whites."

Margaret Walters-Hammond replied: "Scoop of Vanish Oxi Clean with whitener booster in your washing machine drum, *in a tub* with the powder and Comfort."
